It is easy to understand the desire to become like someone we admire. From childhood heroes to public figures who seem successful, talented, confident, or admired, many of us have looked at another person and imagined that their life represented the life we wanted for ourselves. Pastor Matthew Little reminded Kingdom Builders Fellowship Church that admiration can become a trap when it causes us to lose sight of the person God designed us to be.
God’s work in our lives is not simply about making us a slightly improved version of our former selves. He saves and transforms us so that we can become who He created us to become. This is a continuing work, a journey of renewal that begins in the mind and reaches into every part of life. We are not called to imitate the world’s definitions of success, significance, or identity. We are called to become more like Jesus while living faithfully as the unique people God made us to be.
Transformation Begins With a Renewed Mind
The path of becoming begins with transformation in the mind. Our thoughts shape our choices, our choices shape our lives, and the beliefs we carry about ourselves often determine what we believe is possible. If our minds remain governed by old patterns, painful labels, outside opinions, or the pressure to measure up to someone else, it becomes difficult to walk in the freedom God intends for us. That is why we must continually return to God and allow Him to renew our thinking.
Pastor Little emphasized the connection between a changed mind and a changed life. Transformation is not merely external behavior modification; it is the inward work of God that reshapes how we see Him, how we see ourselves, and how we respond to the world around us. At the altar, we surrender the thoughts that have held us captive and make room for God’s truth to direct us. When He renews the mind, He helps us see that our lives are not fixed by our past, our failures, or the expectations others have placed upon us. We can move forward with faith because God is still working in us. We are becoming.
Reject the Labels That Try to Define You
One of life’s great tragedies is spending an entire lifetime trying to be someone God never intended us to be. The world constantly offers labels. People may try to define us by where we come from, what we have done, what has happened to us, how much education we have, how much money we make, or whether they consider us successful. They may even reduce us to our worst decisions and mistakes. Yet none of those labels carries the final authority to determine who we are.
Our past may explain parts of our journey, but it does not have the power to define our future. The opinions of others may be loud, but they are not ultimate. We must stop giving so much time and energy to people who do not have the authority to define our lives. This truth matters for every generation, especially for young people navigating the pressure of friends and culture. God made each person with purpose, and His declaration carries greater weight than every false identity assigned by people. We do not need to wear masks, conform to labels, or reshape ourselves to gain significance. In God, we are not copies of someone else; we are people known, created, and called by Him.
Find Your Identity in Your Creator
Identity begins with the Creator, not with public opinion. Pastor Little used the practical example of a manufacturer and its product: the manufacturer determines what the product was created to do. The product does not tell the manufacturer its purpose, because the creator already understands its design. In the same way, we cannot fully discover who we are apart from the God who created us. He knows our makeup, our purpose, and the life He intends for us to live.
The same principle can be seen in the owner’s manual for a car. If someone needs to understand how a Honda operates, they do not go to a GM dealership for the answer. They go to the source that understands the vehicle’s design, parts, and proper function. Likewise, we cannot look to TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, or the shifting voices of culture to tell us who we are. Those places may offer opinions, comparisons, and trends, but they cannot reveal the purpose God placed within us. If we want understanding, we must go to the Owner’s Manual: the Word of God. God is not guessing about our lives. He knows exactly who He created us to be, and He alone can lead us into that identity.
The Takeaway
God’s transformation is purposeful. He is renewing our minds so we can release the pressure to become what people expect and embrace the identity He has declared over us. This does not mean ignoring growth or remaining comfortable with old ways. It means allowing God to transform us into the people He designed us to become. As He changes our thinking, He changes the direction of our lives. As He frees us from labels, He gives us courage to walk in the truth of who we are.
Today, choose to bring every false definition back to God. Bring the words spoken over you, the mistakes that still try to shame you, the comparisons that drain your joy, and the opinions that have made you question your worth. Let the Creator speak louder than the crowd. You do not have to spend your life chasing another person’s image or trying to prove yourself to people who did not create you. God has already established your value, your identity, and your purpose. Stay close to Him, allow His Word to renew your mind, and keep walking in faith. You are becoming who He created you to be.
