There Is No Fear In Love

1 John 4:18 tells us, “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” This powerful scripture reminds us that true, Godly love has no room for fear. Love and fear cannot coexist in a relationship that is rooted in the kind of love God instructs us to have.

In today’s world, many relationships are filled with anxiety, uncertainty, and even fear. Fear of rejection, fear of not being enough, or fear of being hurt are all emotions that can weigh heavily on our hearts. But when we embrace the love God intends for us—the kind of love that is patient, kind, selfless, and forgiving—fear begins to fade. Fear is connected to punishment, but love is connected to grace.

God’s Word guides us on what we should expect in a relationship. Love, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 13, is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs, and it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. The love described here is the same love that casts out fear. It is a love that gives us security, not insecurity, a love that brings us peace, not anxiety.

If you find fear creeping into your relationships, whether romantic, familial, or friendships, it’s important to remember that perfect love—a love modeled after Christ—has no room for fear. Fear arises when we doubt, when we feel unworthy, or when we hold onto past wounds. But perfect love allows us to let go of these fears, offering instead a space of trust, faith, and vulnerability. It reassures us that love does not come with punishment or uncertainty, but with the promise of growth, healing, and unity.

In relationships, the love we give and receive should always reflect the perfect love of God. It is through this love that we can cast out the fears that often block us from experiencing the fullness of connection. Let’s strive to be made perfect in love, embracing a relationship with others—and with God—that is free from fear.
